Uranus Brings Crisis to India and Pakistan

Over the holiday weekend the hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane erupted into an international crisis when India and Pakistan blamed each other’s intelligence community for covertly instigating the terrorist act. United Nations officials flew into the hotspot, but only to offer humanitarian assistance to the 160 passengers still in the hijackers’ control.

Reflecting the seriousness of this incident, Uranus, the planet of sudden and unexpected crises, is currently exactly on India’s Midheaven (India: August 15, 1947; 12:00 am; New Delhi). The international community has much to be concerned about here, since any apparently minor situation has the potential to escalate into a nuclear confrontation.

Uranus is unique in political astrology because unexpected events or sudden developments often take place when Uranus makes its exact connection to a key point in the national horoscope. Tension to reverse course or radically alter a diplomatic policy builds under the surface, and then becomes manifest as Uranus makes its precise link.

The other outer planets - Jupiter, Chiron, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto become stronger as they get closer to making an exact aspect, but can manifest earlier or later as other faster planets come into effective range (or orb) to activate the characteristic events.

Contributing to the hijacking event, and describing the inherent violence of the situation was last week’s Full Moon. The Full Moon was perfectly aligned with India’s Mars. Pakistan shares India’s birth time (but is set for a different location), so both horoscopes were simultaneously activated by this dangerous martial influence.

The Chiron-Pluto Cycle

One planetary combination stands out among the many clues for understanding the significance of this collective Y2K leap into the next millennium, and that is the very close conjunction between Chiron and Pluto. Unfortunately, we know very little about how these two interact since Chiron was only discovered in 1977, and Pluto is also a relative newcomer (first sighted in 1930).

By checking the historical record, by understanding the geopolitical atmosphere when these two were forming a conjunction, we can get a better handle on their importance now. The Chiron-Pluto cycle lasts about 59 years, and they were last conjunct in 1941. Previously, Chiron and Pluto were conjunct in 1883.

One of the historical, geopolitical parallels between 1941 and 1883 corresponds to major developments in the establishment of a Jewish homeland. In the early 1880s Jews in France, Austria, and Eastern European countries were widely persecuted, leading up to the infamous Dreyfus Affair and the creation of the Zionist movement. 1941 brought Hitler’s “Final Solution” and the Jewish holocaust, leading ultimately to the establishment of Israel in 1948.

Now, only days after the Chiron-Pluto conjunction, Israel and Syria will be meeting in Washington DC to discuss a land-for-peace deal. Syria is the final obstacle to Israel’s secure homeland, and the negotiating parties have already agreed to agree. Israel’s national horoscope (May 14, 1948; 4:37 pm; Tel Aviv) closely reflects this Chiron-Pluto cycle since Chiron is in Pluto’s sign (Scorpio) and opposite the Sun. Then Pluto is strong by being the ruler of the Scorpio Ascendant, and prominently placed in the tenth house.

John Paul II and the Pilgrims of Time

A frail Pope John Paul II offered salutations in 59 languages during the Vatican’s annual Christmas Day mass, and over the next two weeks he is expected to greet tens of millions of visitors. He referred to himself and fellow believers as “Pilgrims in Time,” as he neared his personal goal of leading the Catholic Church into the third millennium.

Pope John Paul 11 was born with both the Sun and Moon in traditional, stable Taurus (at 1 pm according to Noel Tyl; Krakow, Poland), and these two are located in the ninth house of religion. Mercury, Ceres, and Venus are also in the ninth house, amplifying the importance of this sector in his life path.

Then, the two religious planets, Jupiter and Neptune, are conjunct in the royal sign of Leo, which combine synergistically to produce a naturally ethereal patriarch. Jupiter and Neptune are given actual visionary, prophetic abilities through their trine to perceptive Pallas Athena (compare Stevie Wonder’s horoscope from last week). The Jupiter-Neptune conjunction is also trine Chiron which bestows wisdom and teaching ability.

The Pope has suffered through an assassination attempt, surgeries to treat a tumor and broken hip, and Parkinson’s disease. An inevitable life cycle is the transit of Saturn through one’s Sun Sign. Saturn reminds us of the passage of time, and often brings debilitating effects to physical health, especially when one is already in a weakened state. Saturn is in Taurus now and will repeatedly pass over the Pope’s Sun and Moon between June 2000 and April 2001.
