NewsScope for December 13, 1999 by WolfStar McCain Surges Ahead, Bradley Falters For the first time since the 2000 Presidential Campaign began a few months ago, the invincibility of the George W. Bush juggernaut has been shaken. John McCain’s poll numbers passed Bush’s in the critical primary state of New Hampshire. Meanwhile, Al Gore’s offensive against his rival Bill Bradley seems to be paying off, and in general the political tide is turning. Astrologically, the GOP debates and other shape-shifting political events can be read from a confluence of dynamic planetary factors, especially the entrance of Mars into the ongoing Saturn-Uranus square. Then, the political asteroid Pallas Athena is now at a critical phase as she turns retrograde exactly on the U.S. Midheaven. As Pallas turns, the political tide turns. The simplest meaning of Pallas is her significator of the favorite son or daughter. Because Pallas in the U.S. horoscope is now under major activation (by the progressed Sun), all the top-tier candidates are the favorite sons of favorite American families. John McCain is the son of a famous admiral, and George W., Al Gore, and Steve Forbes all gain in name recognition due to their famous fathers. The only exception is Bill Bradley. Bradley checked into the hospital over the weekend for a mild heart condition. While most every news report indicated this was a minor incident and not to worry, Bradley’s horoscope indicates otherwise.* Because he doesn’t fit the requisite Pallas archetype, it’s a good bet he will eventually drop out of the race for health reasons. Pallas Sets the Stage Pallas Athena brings a fascinating variety of political, economic, and diplomatic developments when she is prominent. She is the ultimate protector of civilized interactions, frequently known as a “people-pleaser” so that often hostile forces can get along. But she is also the Goddess of War, and is not adverse to getting tough when the times call for it. With Pallas Athena on the U.S. Midheaven now, the most promising Middle East developments in 30 years are beginning. For the first time Israel and Syria will begin serious negotiations, with the Golan Heights being the land to trade for a lasting peace. Pallas is the Goddess of Justice, and her presence at the U.S. Midheaven led to a series of diplomatic arrests involving spies. The FBI arrested a Russian diplomat for listening to top secret State department talks via an ingeniously tiny bugging device. Then the FBI finally arrested physicist Wen Ho Lee for selling nuclear technology secrets to the Chinese government. Perhaps the most immediate concern to many Americans is Pallas Athena’s rulership over computers and the internet. The NASDAQ internet stocks have been leading a gravity-defying rally on Wall Street for the past six weeks. Pallas turns retrograde on Wednesday December 15 exactly conjunct the NYSE’s Uranus. A turning point here represents a turning point in the upward trend of technology stocks, now dangerously close to being a bubble of frenzied speculation. Elian Gonzalez, Caught in the Middle Elian Gonzalez was rescued off the Miami coast last Thanksgiving, the lone survivor of a boating accident which killed his mother and ten others fleeing Cuba. Since then he has become the center of a hurricane of mass protests in both Havana and Miami. His Cuban father has demanded his return, but relatives in Miami say his mother died bringing him to the U. S shores. Elian celebrated his sixth birthday last Monday (December 6), and his horoscope reflects the challenges of his tenuous position. All the children born in 1993 have the extraordinary Uranus-Neptune conjunction which encourages internationalism and other border-transcending experiences. This is the same conjunction that fostered the World Trade Organization, the World Wide Web, and is the central feature of Bill Clinton’s Inauguration chart. Elian’s Sagittarius Mars happens to be exactly opposite the U.S. Mars, so that his personal desire for freedom creates a conflict with American military objectives. His Mercury-Pluto conjunction in Scorpio shows mental toughness and resourcefulness, qualities which allowed him to survive in the ocean and psychologically recover in good order. The asteroids Ceres and Juno describe the complex family relationships at the heart of this political drama. Ceres, the parenting asteroid, is located in independent, willful Aries. She opposes Juno, the marriage asteroid, a combination which creates tension between the desires of the single parent and the concerns for the partnership. These two asteroids square the generational Uranus-Neptune conjunction which expands the personal family conflict to a broader, cultural clash.
