Lost At Sea

The week that Saturn and Uranus formed their first of three squares witnessed several important landmarks, including the world population surpassing 6 billion, and Microsoft surpassing $1/2 trillion in value. International tensions increased dramatically in Iran and China, and NATO reported that 10,000 Kosovars had been massacred.

However, trumping lead news stories across the global village was the search for John Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn who were lost at sea. As the Saturn-Uranus square hit the U.S. Midheaven, John Kennedy Jr. disappeared in a tragic flying accident. Astrologically, the accident parallels President Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963 when Saturn and Neptune squared each other in the same degree zone, and also activating the U.S. Midheaven.

As noted in previous columns, combinations of Ceres and Pluto often bring tragic deaths, and this one came as transiting Ceres was exactly opposite the U.S. Pluto. Mercury, the planet governing travel, was also prominent: Mercury retrograde squared the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, and the transiting Sun was conjunct the U.S. Mercury. Mercury was also squaring Kennedy’s own Neptune, contributing to a state of confusion and poor judgment.

The U.S. Mercury is contacted once every year by the Sun, so that this day (plus or minus a day) often brings important developments around flight. Three years ago to the day TWA #800 mysteriously exploded just off Long Island. Thirty years ago the Apollo 11 was launched toward the Moon, completing the mission statement enunciated by President Kennedy on May 25, 1961.

China and Iran

One of the clearest manifestations of the Saturn-Uranus square is the accelerating movement away from dictatorial governments toward independence. Last week Taiwan declared its intention to seek a seat in the United Nations, provoking a furious outburst from Beijing. In Iran, students demonstrated across the nation for cultural and legal reforms.

Iran’s religious revolution in 1979 sparked similar sentiments across the swath of Islamic nations. Over the next month as we approach the much celebrated Solar Eclipse of August 11, 1999 and attendant Grand Cross, this is one major trend to watch. Saturn, representing the forces of the status quo (the old revolution), is competing with Uranus, and the urge for radical and immediate liberalization.

China’s situation is potentially more explosive due to its activated Mars-Pluto conjunction. These two planets symbolize a powerful military faction within China’s current government, which was established on October 1, 1949 (at 3:15 pm in Beijing). Since this Mars-Pluto dynamic is now and for the next month being activated by transiting Saturn and Uranus, the Red Army could arise suddenly against perceived foes.

The U.S. State Department has warned Taiwan to back off, and assured China it still supports a one-China policy. China’s standing is reaching a critical turning point now with its progressed Sun conjunct its Midheaven. This combination gets triggered on July 28 when transiting Chiron turns direct right on this loaded zodiac degree. We can expect some rapid developments from China within a few days of Chiron’s station.

JFK jr. Downed by Pluto

American icon John Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn disappeared into the misty sea while flying into Martha’s Vineyard for a family wedding. The latest Kennedy family tragedy echoed somberly through the nation, as observers wondered about the phenomenal blessings and curse that goes with the name.

JFK jr. was born with his Sun in jet-setting, cosmopolitan Sagittarius (on November 25, 1960; 12:22 am; Washington DC). The tragic component of his family history can be seen in the exact conjunction of Chiron (the “Wounded Healer”) with his Moon, which in turn is conjunct the U.S. Moon.

Kennedy was born with Pluto near his Virgo Ascendant, giving him impeccable good taste and charisma, but also an inner compulsion to be a perfectionist and live up to an impossible ideal. As Steven Forrest* describes in The Book of Pluto, “guilt arises when we feel we have fallen short of a deeply held ideal.” And a basic tenet of humanistic psychology is that people who feel guilty tend to punish themselves. Transiting Pluto was only 0º02 from forming an exact square to his natal Pluto at the time of the accident.

Kennedy was also born with a difficult Mars-Saturn opposition in the family signs of Cancer and Capricorn. Hard Mars-Saturn aspects often take reckless risks, and it’s no coincidence that his progressed Midheaven (describing his point of destiny) was exactly conjunct his Mars when he elected to fly through the thick fog. Mars in young Kennedy’s horoscope rules his eighth house of death.
