Crises, Turning Points, and Breakthroughs, Part II
Two major astrological events coincided on Sunday May
17, a celestial coincidence that had a profound impact on
events around our global village. First, Uranus made its
retrograde station, jump-starting a phase of dynamic,
exciting changes. The Saturn was simultaneously adversely
linked (square) the U.S. Pluto, indicating that power was
being expressed in extreme ways.
Within five days (plus or minus) of this Double Whammy
the world seemed to turn upside down. Indonesia's
beleagured President Suharto stepped down after 32 years
in power following riots in Jakarta, and political pressure
from Madeleine Albright and the IMF. Vying for this
week's cover story on Time and Newsweek, Kip Kinkel, a
15 year old Oregon student, murdered his parents, and then
fired at least 51 rounds at his fellow classmates, killing two
students.
This year has been unprecedented in the number of school
shooting incidents, perhaps astrologically reflected in
transiting Pluto's square to the U.S. Ceres (decaying
parent-child relationships), and transiting Chiron's square
to the U.S. Midheaven (irrational wounding, violence with
Chiron in Scorpio).
These influences have been in effect since the beginning of
the school year. They fit precisely into Kinkel’s personal
chart (b. 8/30/1982): transiting Chiron has been conjunct
his merciless Scorpio Mars, and transiting Pluto has
likewise been squaring his Sun.
In other Turning points, the largest jackpot in world history
was claimed, with a $104 million payoff. Then, huge forest
fires choked Mexico's entire population, and sent a blanket
of smoke over most of Texas. The Justice Department
leveled an historic lawsuit against Microsoft which
commentators are comparing to the epochal 1906 lawsuit
against Standard Oil. Plus, blessed peace in Ireland.
Satellites Shaken Up
The day after Uranus turned retrograde (last Monday), the
geosynchronous satellite named Galaxy IV mysteriously
went haywire, knocking out 95 million beepers across the
country. Satellite technology was prominently features in
several other headline stories, as today's news is following
an important astrological cycle.
The Satellite Age began during the Cold War when the
Russians launched Sputnik on October 4, 1957. Uranus, the
planet associated with new technology, was in proud Leo
then, and the surprising success shocked Americans into a
hurry-up space program. Now, Uranus is in Aquarius,
exactly opposite the location of Uranus nearly 41 years ago.
When India exploded its five atomic bombs, it had eluded
American spy satellites, the primary intelligence gathering
mode of the CIA and NSA. Rupert Murdoch was recently
denied approval to purchase the third of three
geosynchronous cable TV satellites over the U.S. And
soon, satellites will make accessing the internet available
anywhere in the global village. All these important
developments, and many more can be expected under the
astrological influence of Uranus opposite its natal position.
Watch over the next month for more satellite stories as
transiting Chiron enters this important zodiacal zone.
Chiron's challenging link to Uranus is the same "Wounded
by Technology" connection which heightened the space
race in 1957. Note in particular President Clinton's latest
scandal where he allegedly gave China satellite technology
via the Loral Corporation in return for a $100,000
campaign contribution.
Dead Sea Scrolls Come to Life
Just after midnight on November 30, 1947 a Jerusalem
professor of antiquities discovered the first fragments of the
Dead Sea Scrolls. Synchronistically, this precise moment in
New York the fledgling United Nations was voting to
partition the region around Jerusalem, giving Jews a
homeland alongside the Palestinians.
A horoscope for this profoundly historic moment describes
not only the fractious interface between Israel and the
Palestinians, but potentially, the fractious interface between
the historic Jesus and the mythological version presented
by modern Christianity. This chart features a Sun-Jupiter
conjunction in Sagittarius, a point now being awakened by
transiting Pluto.
Pluto's presence here is demanding reconciliation between
two intensely antagonistic political forces, represented by
Benjamin Netanyahu and Yasir Arafat. The Jerusalem
question will be settled by 1999, one way or another.
Transiting Pluto will be hovering over this Sun-Jupiter
conjunction throughout 1998 and 1999.
In a parallel movement, the translations of the Dead Sea
Scrolls is now out of the hands of an academic elite for the
first time since their discovery. Professor Robert
Eisenman's hefty new book, "James, the Brother of Jesus,"
is now available, and challenges what people think
happened in the first century AD with what actually
happened, according to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Eisenman
shows that a nationalistic, militant Christian movement
under the leadership of James was the direct line from
Jesus, until they were massacred in 70 AD by the Romans.
